Since 1969, Haeger & Schmidt Logistics has been operating without interruption for all water-side transports of thyssenkrupp Rasselstein in Andernach. thyssenkrupp Rasselstein GmbH is one of the world’s leading suppliers of high-quality, precision-manufactured packaging steel. The Andernach site in Germany – the world’s largest production facility of its kind – produces around 1.5 million tonnes of packaging steel annually. At that time, both companies were linked to each other through their common parent company Thyssen and maintained a close partnership with Stadtwerke Andernach, which, as a port operator, provided the infrastructure for the development of modern logistics concepts with inland and river-sea ships, rail and truck.
The milestones in the development of the past 51 years were the opening of the new harbour basin in Andernach in 1970, the first shipments of thyssenkrupp Rasselstein products to Great Britain in the early 1990s using coasters, the start of container transport by inland waterway at the end of 1998, the opening of the Container Terminal Andernach (CSA) in 2000, the expansion of the harbour area and the start of liner train connections to Antwerp and Rotterdam in 2010.
The Andernach Container Terminal’s container turnover has grown continuously from 10,158 standard containers (TEU) in 2000 to 80,681 TEU in 2010 and a record result of 156,634 TEU in 2019. Andernach quickly became the largest container terminal on the Middle Rhine.
This development was accompanied by continuous investment in the port infrastructure by the Andernach public utility company. The trimodal KLV terminal in Andernach not only has handling equipment but also warehouse capacities for services related to container loading. The security monitoring of the ISPS-certified terminal and the digitalisation of handling have also been and will continue to be brought up to the latest state of the art.
“A decisive factor in the development of the port and logistics location Andernach was the close cooperation and the good relationship of trust between the management and employees of Stadtwerke Andernach, the Haeger & Schmidt Andernach branch and customers such as thyssenkrupp Rasselstein, Weig GmbH & Co. KG and other medium-sized companies and shippers in the region,” says Haeger & Schmidt Logistics Managing Director Heiko Brückner.
“But also the globally active shipping company MSC has supported the development significantly from the beginning and gradually other large container shipping companies have opened depots in the port of Andernach”, says Brückner. On 17 September 2020, thyssenkrupp Rasselstein GmbH, the most important customer of the Port of Andernach and the terminal operator Haeger & Schmidt Logistics, extended the existing service agreements with Haeger & Schmidt Logistics GmbH for a further ten years for the third time. “We are pleased about this proof of confidence and are looking forward to continuing the proven cooperation with the accustomed high quality standards”, said Heiko Brückner.
