The self-developed heavy-lift \u200bbarge\u200b\u00a0 Fortitudo celebrates its fifth anniversary this year. While its home port is Weil am Rhein, it is rarely seen there.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Most of the time, this unique vessel can be seen on French inland waterways. \u200bHowever\u200b\u200b\u00a0the Fortitudo is also on the move in Germany and the Benelux countries. The\u200b following\u200b pictures show a few of the highlights of the \u201cspecialist\u201d for heavy and bulky items. What distinguishes the Fortitudo from the other \u200bP\u00e9niches\u200b is its load capacity of 300 tons and the possibility to load voluminous \u200bitems\u200b\u200b\u00a0of up to 25 meters in length and 4.60 meters in width.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n

In July 2018, the Fortitudo \u200bwas\u200b launched at the French shipyard in F\u00e9camp (Normandy). Her first voyage takes the heavy-lift \u200bbarge\u200b\u00a0 from Calais in northern France to Strasbourg in Alsace. A transport from plant to plant, \u200bthe vessel was \u200bloaded \u200bwith\u200b\u00a0 three \u200bitems\u200b for autonomous power generation.<\/p>\n

The Fortitudo transports heavy-lift colli and bulky \u200bitems\u200b of up to 300 t directly via the inland waterway and canal network. On her journey from Neuf-Brisach to Lyon in 2019, she loaded a 230-tonne stator. On the way, \u200bshe\u200b passed the EU Parliament in Strasbourg and the autumn-coloured Vosges Mountains. In the Rhine-Marne Canal, the transport \u200bwas\u200b held up by a plague of algae. \u200bSo huge\u200b quantities of algae \u200bhad\u200b to be fished out of the lock before \u200bthe vessel\u200b c\u200bould\u200b continue. \u200bAdditionally,\u200b\u200b t\u200bhe direct waterway between Alsace and Lyon was closed, so \u200bthe vessel had to take a\u200b\u200b\u00a0detour\u200b via Lorraine, Champagne and Burgundy. During th\u200bis\u200b three-week trip, the Fortitudo mastered 326 locks, three tunnels and 2 watersheds.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n

When it comes to tunnels, bridges and locks, the captain of the Fortitudo often \u200bperforms precision work, down to the millimeter.\u200b \u200bThis is due to the fact that\u200b the heavy-lift \u200bvessel\u200b\u00a0 is \u200boptimized\u200b for the French canal network\u200b;\u200b\u200b\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u200bits dimensions are based on the specifications of the canals of the Freycinet network and have been stretched to the maximum. This \u200bleads to \u200bparticularly narrow \u200bmanoeuvres\u200b\u200b . For example, the passage through the tunnel in Han sur Meuse on the French Meuse near Givet is \u200bquite a spectacle\u200b\u200b \u200b.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

\u200b\u200bThe route for a heavylift transport passed through the middle of the French capital, Paris, during the summer. \u200b\u200bDestined for Nogent-sur-Seine, hundred kilometers away from Paris, \u200bthe Fortitudo\u200b loaded with a 280-tonne rotor,\u200b passe\u200bd\u200b, the Eiffel Tower and the Bridge of Tsar Alexander III, one of the most beautiful bridges in Paris. \u200b<\/p>\n <\/div>\n
